I often get asked if I do the romantic things I write about...

"In my opinion, if you only write what you experience, you're not a very good fiction writer. Fiction is a job that takes great imagination and all I can hope is that a few people like mine."

Why I like this quote -

"I often get asked if I do the romantic things I write about. I think it is most often assumed that romance writers do all the things that are in their novels or are unhappy some way in real life. I also write horror, but not once has anyone asked me if I drink blood like my vampires, or kill and torture people, or long to do so. The answer is, of course, no. I think it's silly to assume that just because someone writes about romance they long for more or are deficient in some way. I am very happy in real life and very much in love with my husband. It is that relationship that enables me to write well. If my home life wasn't so great, I would be too distracted to write."

Rick Robinson, AUTHOR QUOTE The Maximum Contribution Sniper Bid (due fall 2008)

"It is said that everybody has one book in them. My problem was that I spent 20 years writing the wrong one."

"For 20 years or so I kept trying to write a novel about the exploits of my crazy uncle. He lived in the Everglades with an Indian tribe. When I was growing up he used to bring me and the kids of his fishing buddies the greatest gifts. The plot revolved around a 'gator he brought to one of the kids who kept it for a summer.

I was telling this to one of my friends over lunch one day ane he said "Why are you trying to write about that? You've always telling stories about your 30 years on the campaign trail. You should write a book about politics."

The light bulb went off and 30 days later I had 150 pages.

The Maximum Contribution was released in the fall of 2007 and has been named a Finalist for the 2008 Next Generation Indie Book of the Year. The sequel, Sniper Bid, is due out on election day 2008."

-Rick Robinson

Folks, I checked and Sniper Bid isn't available on Amazon yet for pre-order.

S.D. Hintz--Modern Author Quote of the Day

"A rejection, when explicated beyond a form letter response, refines me as a writer. The feedback is yet another reader's opinion on your work and should spur you to take a second glance. In the past, rejections have led me to publications. I'm a firm believer in that an author must be open to criticism. After all, you are putting your work out there for the world to read and pick apart."

Rick R. Reed--Author Sound Bite of the Day

"I don't like to plan too much because I think my best writing comes from being spontaneous, from the surprises I encounter along the way. I'm a great believer in trusting instincts...they're almost always right."

"This quote was inspired by a conversation I was having recently with some other writers who outline and plan out their novels. I have always thought that's a very good idea (like brushing after every meal), but one I can't bring myself to do. I finally realized though that I work in the way that's best for me, and that's sort of reading the book as I'm writing it. If I plan things out too much, they just end up being cut and dried, boring. Writing can be as much of an adventure as reading."

Delfin Carbonell--Author Quote of the Day

"Never publish anything you might think superfluous or daft on second thought."

"This is the best I can do. It's not that good but now that I am reading so much that is worthless and senseless I am getting to feel a second thought might avoid a lot of time waste."

Maria V Snyder--Author Sound Bite of the Day

"The password to enter the writer’s club is persistence."

"Persistence is a writer’s most important tool. Persistence puts your butt in the chair day after day. Persistence gets the words written page after page. Persistence forces you through the difficult scenes. Persistence won’t let you take shortcuts. Persistence makes you stay with a story even when you’re sick of it. Persistence stays with you until you reach the story’s end. Persistence makes you revise again and again and again. Persistence keeps you sending out submissions despite the pile of rejections. Persistence is the reason my book found a publisher.
If you want to join the writer’s club – all you’ll need is persistence."

Elizabeth Lucas-Taylor--Quote of the Day

"About those rejections. When you are just starting out as a writer, those rejections can be devastating until your realize they are part of the writing profession. Take them in stride and keep at it. Keep in mind that each NO is one step closer to a YES! My first book, UNFINISHED BUSINESS, had five rejections before I found a publisher. I had a writer friend that laughed, and said, “Ha! I have shoe boxes full of rejections.” No matter how many rejections or how few, it still is a blow to your delicate writer’s ego. After all, our work is our ‘baby,’ and when we show our baby pictures, we want everyone to oooohhh and ahhhhhh over our baby. As writers we have to have a thick skin. Not everyone, including publishers and reviewers, will like my work. For those that do like my work, they are my “fans” and I cherish each and every one. To be a writer, you have to pay attention to the positive...and the rest will take care of itself."

Richard Grayson -- Famous Saying

"Stories should have a beginning, middle, and end -- preferably not in that order."

"I have a writing professor say that in my story "Innovations," but it's something that I've always believed -- which is probably why I'm often considered an "experimental" short story writer. Or, even after 280 published stories and seven book-length collections, an unknown one.

Life doesn't proceed in a straight line but takes many curves. Often you find yourself back at the same intersection three or four times. And sometimes you end up exactly where you started out. To me, the best stories imitate life that way, if in no other."

Richard Grayson, Author of I Survived Caracas Traffic: Stories from the Me Decades

Quote of the Day--Karen Laven

"Rejection isn't fatal."

"This realization came to me years ago when I was holding what seemed like the 2.3 millionth rejection letter in my shaking hands. Teary-eyed, I tossed it on the ground and dramatically thought "this is gonna kill me." I remained breathing, however, and deduced that, although painful (extremely painful at times) rejection would NOT kill me. It hurt like hell, it broadened my waistline (doughnuts and rejection DO mix) but it also gave me an undeniable fortitude to prove those editors wrong! In order to do that, I couldn't give up,darnit. The ironic aspect of the quote is that I used it as a title for a piece about writing and it was published by several writing zines. Rejection not only wasn't fatal; it actually proved to be profitable (if you can call $30 to $40 bucks profitable. I sure as heck did :-)."

Author Quote of the Day--R.M. Hamilton

"Never give up writing because you never know what great stories you will accomplish with your imagination."

"I have had a lot of first time writers tell me they might quit writing their current book because they have a case of writers block with their story and need some advice. I tell them this every time and it seems to make them motivated to continue on writing. I also use my quote to keep myself motivated."

Author Quote of the Day--Christina Barber

"Grab your reader by the collar and fully submerge them into your world. Keep them thrilled at each twist and turn, completely unsettled in their seat. For that is what makes great fiction."

"I wrote this when trying to help a new author understand how to draw a reader into his story. And as I wrote this author a short note and penned these lines, I'd realized I'd written my quote. This is my mantra, for each time I set down words on paper (or computer), I keep those lines fresh in my mind."
